Video game movies have never really done well in Hollywood, they’ve just never been very good, instead they’re rushed out with poor plot lines, bad acting and half-assed direction.
Yet 2016 looks to be the year hoping to change all that with a whole host of video game films being released. Assassin’s Creed and Warcraft are easily the most anticipated among them but Sony is also taking part in the new trend with their released of the first ever mobile game adaptation, The Angry Birds Movie. I can get my head around an Assassin’s Creed and Warcraft film because the video games have such a strong lore and characters to bring ton the big screen, but Angry Birds? That’s still something I don’t really understand.
Jason Sudeikis is voicing an Angry Bird called Red, who lives on an island filled with flightless birds that’s thrown into complete turmoil by the arrival of mysterious green piggies. Josh Gad voices the speedy bird Chuck and Danny McBride is taking on the role of the Bomb.
This film is clearly aimed at little children so I don’t really get a lot from the trailer myself but I think it will actually do quite well within its intended audience group.
The film is directed by Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly and will include the voices of Keegan-Michael Key, Bill Hader, and Peter Dinklage also. The Angry Birds Movie will open in cinemas on May 20, 2016.
